DANCE THEATRE: Exoticism - BEMAC, QLD Multicultural Centre

20 June 2025

Season: June 20th, 2025

Title: Lucky Lartey’s Exoticism

Presented By: BEMAC Live, QLD Multicultural Centre

Genre: Contemporary Dance / Physical Theatre / Cultural Exploration

Synopsis: Exoticism is a striking and visceral exploration of exotification, identity, and modern masculinity, choreographed and performed by Lucky Lartey alongside Vishnu Arunasalam. This powerful duet confronts the lived experience of culturally diverse artists in Australia, using movement to dismantle preconceived notions of what contemporary work from artists of colour is “supposed” to look like.

Raw, vulnerable, and deeply collaborative, the performance leans into mirroring, cultural dialogue, and bodily expression to reclaim identity on their own terms. Featuring dramaturgy by Martin del Amo and video/animation design by Nathaniel Nelson, Exoticism is a conscious act of resistance—challenging audience expectations and making space for authenticity in storytelling through dance.
