THEATRE: Mr Red Light - HOTA, Nightsong

27 June 2025

Season: June 27th, 2025

Title: Mr Red Light

Presented By: HOTA in partnership with Nightsong

Genre: Dark Comedy / Absurdist Theatre

Synopsis: Wild slapstick meets poignant human insight in this darkly comic and outrageously original play from New Zealand’s award-winning Nightsong theatre company. Mr Red Light is a man plagued by bad luck. His latest mishap? A botched bank robbery that lands him not in a vault, but in a humble pie shop, holding three less-than-cooperative hostages. Add in a hilariously inept police negotiator and a ticking clock, and you have the recipe for chaos. As the situation unfolds, an unexpected camaraderie forms between Mr Red Light and his captives, and a mystery emerges—how does this man know so much about their lives? Is he just unlucky, or something more? Blending slapstick, philosophy, and surreal twists, Mr Red Light explores the connections between strangers, the nature of destiny, and the surprising beauty of life's detours.
