Synopsis: The Birth of Bel Canto traces the origins of the bel canto operatic style back to the madrigal. Featuring five solo voices accompanied by continuo (cello and harpsichord), the performance brings to life works by Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Strozzi and other early composers. These intimate, expressive songs explore love, heartbreak and the human condition, laying the foundations for opera as we know it today.
