THEATRE: Welcome to Thebes - Queensland Conservatorium

12 July 2025

Season: July 12th - 19th, 2025

Title: Welcome to Thebes

Presented By: Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University

Genre: Political Drama / Modern Greek Tragedy

About: Democracy is young, peace is fragile, and a war-torn city clings to hope. In Welcome to Thebes, playwright Moira Buffini boldly reimagines Greek mythology through a modern political lens. With echoes of Antigone, Eurydice, and Theseus, this gripping drama explores power, leadership, justice, and the price of survival in a society struggling to rebuild.

Directed by Timothy Wynn and performed by the graduating Acting students of QCGU, the production dives headfirst into urgent contemporary themes—gender, corruption, diplomacy, and moral conflict. This timely work asks: when a country is on the edge, who gets to lead the way forward?
