AUDITION NOTICE: Amigos - Mercury Theatre

Title: Amigos

Presented By: Mercury Theatre

Genre: Theatre / Comedy

Synopsis: In a moment of glory at the 1968 Olympics, an Australian rowing team known as ‘The Four Amigos’ won bronze. It was lifetime bonding material - or so it

seemed. Thirty-five years later only two of the amigos keep in touch. Jim is a

wealthy banker with a young, beautiful wife and seems to have it all. His friend

Dick, a heart surgeon, has something that Jim covets: a sterling reputation.

When the two mates meet up in Port Douglas with their wives, they have

competing personal agendas. Then Steven, a third Amigo, turns up, ready to

expose the past. A savagely funny play that hinges on the subtle aggression and

unacknowledged dependencies of male friendship – and the angst and

irritation of those on the sidelines.

Available Roles/Character Breakdown:

  • Jim: Male, aged 50-65 - Jim is an exceptionally ambitious person, motivated by a desire for influence and respect. He envies his friend Dick’s accomplishments—especially his OAE—which represents the kind of success Jim hopes to attain. However, his strong focus on status occasionally gives him a somewhat pretentious air.

  • Sophie: Female, aged 20-30 - Sophie is Jim’s second and notably younger wife, a contrast that leaves Hilary—Dick’s older spouse—feeling somewhat unsettled by her presence. Like Jim, Sophie is keenly aware of status and eager to climb the social ladder. She isn’t above using those around her, Jim included, to enhance her own standing.

  • Dick: Male, aged 50-65 - Dick, a respected heart surgeon, has the social standing Jim desperately wants. He’s compassionate and well-liked, an undeniably good guy—though even good guys can take pleasure in watching a dishonest friend get what’s coming to them.

  • Hilary: Female, aged 50-65 - Hilary is Dick’s wife. She has a strong sense of justice, a dry, tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, and an exceptional intelligence that is often underestimated by those around her.

  • Stephen: Male, aged 50-65 - Stephen has been out of contact with Jim and Dick for years due to a past disagreement. He has endured significant hardship—truly going through “hell and back.” Although he was once vulnerable, he has returned now with his own sense of justice.
