Available Roles/Character Breakdown:
Claude and others 50 – 60s Baritone (top G4) - This character is based on real-life Mayor of Gander, Claude Elliott. The gregarious character opens the show and steers the ship when the crisis takes hold.
Oz and others 30s – 50s Tenor (top G4) - This character is based on Oz Fudge, real-life constable of Gander. Ever the quirky, small-town cop, he is always close by to lend a hand.
Nick and others 40s – 60s Baritone (top E4) - Inspired by a real-life person, Nick is a stuffy, British oil executive, flying to Texas on business. While the world is upended by the events in NYC, Nick’s is turned upside down when he falls for a warm and sociable Texan woman, named Diane.
Bob and others 20s - 40s Baritone - A hardened New Yorker, Bob starts out jaded and suspicious but soon falls under spell of the charming people, and the whiskey, that he finds in Gander. This role must be played by a POC performer.
Kevin J and others 30s – 40s Tenor or Baritone - Inspired by a real-line person, Kevin J is diverted to gander while flying with his partner, Kevin T. He is most disgruntled with the situation, which manifests as sarcasm. This role doubles as a middle-eastern character.
Kevin T and others 30s – 40s Tenor (top G4) - This character is based on the real-life person who wrote the original story that the show is based upon. While Kevin T’s partner struggles to cope with the situation, he could not be happier or more grateful to have found himself in Gander and to meet the Newfoundlanders.
Beverley and others 50s Mezzo (top C5) - This character is based on real-life Captain Beverly Bass, the first female captain for American Airline and trailblazer for women in aviation. She needs to be gutsy and since. This role also plays the contrasting, excitable Gander primary school teacher, Annette.
Hannah and others 40s – 60s Contemporary Soprano (top E5) - A native New Yorker, Hannah spends her time in Gander desperately awaiting news of her fire-fighter son. While trying not to imagine the worst, she finds a friend in Beulah. This role must be played by a POC performer.
Diane and others 40s – 60s Contemporary Soprano (top D5) - A warm and sociable Texan woman, who, when she finds herself diverted to Gander, and finally learns that her family are safe, unveils her carefree side and finds herself falling for the stuffy, British oil exec, Nick.
Janice and others 20s – 30s Contemporary Soprano (top E5) - This character is an amalgamation of several real-life Gander residents. An eager, local TV reporter, she is thrown in the deep end on her first day. Initially naive, she must not only face the pain and confusion around her, but report on it to people all around the world.
Bonnie and others 30s – 40s Mezzo (top B4) - This bold and feisty character is based on the real-life Bonnie Harris, who blatantly defies FAA orders not to enter the planes’ cargo holds, in order to ensure the safety of countless animals.
Beulah and others 40s – 60s Mezzo (top B4) - This character is an amalgamation of real-life Gander locals. As head of the Gander Academy, in many ways Buelah is the glue that holds the town together. Her nononsense, matriarchal approach to managing the crisis ensures that Gander is ready to almost double its population in an instant, and house feed and clothe the “come from aways.”
SWINGS – to ensure the smooth running of the production, the creative team strive to cast 2-4 actors to act as swings for multiple roles. The distribution of these roles will depend on the casting of the swings. While, the swings will not be guaranteed a show, they will become our vocal booth singers so they are available as emergencies during each performance, should they be required. This will be a challenging, but great fun undertaking for these performers!
