Title: The Female of the Species

Genre: Contemporary Comedy / Satire


Synopsis: Alone in her country cottage, Margot Mason — rockstar feminist, writer, and fearless academic — is battling writer’s block as she attempts to write a follow-up to her seminal work The Cerebral Vagina. Enter Molly, a devoted fan with an axe to grind. Faced with the true impact of her life’s work, Margot must defend her choices not only to Molly, but to a host of friends and foes — and ultimately, to us.As debates around gender, politics, and online discourse seep into the Australian zeitgeist, The Female of the Species remains an Australian classic with piercing relevance almost twenty years after its premiere.


Audition Requirements:

  • Audition Date: 18th January 2026

  • Audition Location: Northside Studio Banyo

  • Please prepare a 2-minute comedic monologue of your choice.

  • On the day, performers will also be provided with scenes from the play for cold reads.

Performance Dates: 7–16 May 2026

Performance Times: Thursday–Saturday

Performance Location: PIP Theatre, 20 Park Rd, Milton

Rehearsal Dates: dependent on cast availability

Rehearsal Times: 2–3 nights per week expected


Warnings: Adult themes, strong language

Performer Age: Adult performers

  • MEAA Standard Profit Share Agreement

  • Performers from all backgrounds and identities are encouraged to apply

  • Age ranges listed are suggestions only

  • The roles of Molly, Tess, and Frank have already been cast


Available Roles/Character Breakdown:

  • Margot Mason — 50s–60s. Rockstar feminist and formidable academic. Brilliant, confronting, and fully aware of her own power.

  • Bryan Thornton — 30s. Husband of Tess, father of two, boyish and affable. A master of water-cooler conversation.

  • Theo Reynolds — 50s–60s. Publisher and professional opportunity finder. Very dapper.
