Title: Tootsie the Musical

Synopsis: Based on the iconic comedy film, Tootsie follows out-of-work actor Michael Dorsey, who disguises himself as actress Dorothy Michaels to land a role — leading to uproarious comedic situations, heartfelt relationships, and a newfound perspective on identity and empathy. The musical features music and lyrics by Tony Award-winner David Yazbek and a book by Robert Horn.

Audition Self-Tape Due: Friday March 6th, 12PM.


Audition Requirements:

  • All auditionees prepare a side read based on the character(s) they

    feel most drawn to. Please select a scene or excerpt that resonates

    with you and showcases your abilities. Sides available on the BTG website.

  • Please prepare two contrasting song excerpts in the style of the

    show. Songs from the show are permitted as one choice only. The

    excerpts should be a verse and a chorus approximately 90 seconds

    a song. All songs should be performed with backing track accompaniment.

    Please bring a device with your backing tracks cued and ready.

Rehearsal Dates: Beginning 15th March on Tuesday & Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Rehearsal Times:

  • Tues & Thurs - 7PM - 10PM

  • Sun - 4PM - 9PM


Warnings: Availability for rehearsals and performances is required; performers will need to commit to scheduled calls once cast.

Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels (40-45, Male) | Vocal Range Top: D5 | Vocal Range Bottom: A2

Character Description: Michael is an actor’s actor. A focused perfectionist,

outspoken, stubborn, abrasive and frustrated at where his career hasn’t taken him.

Highly intelligent and desperate to do the one thing he loves more than life itself…

act. Dorothy Michaels is strong-willed, understanding, and humorous. Slightly coy,

slightly vain and completely lovable.

*Audition Requirements: 1 of the 2 songs required need to show the Dorothy voice in

the style of ‘I won’t let you down’. Auditonees may use this song, or choose another.


Julie Nichols (30-40, Female) | Vocal Range Top: G5 | Vocal Range Bottom: E3

Character Description: An actor at a crossroad in her life. Focused, self-aware and

self-assured. She masks her pain and longs to connect.


Sandy Lester (30-40, Female) | Vocal Range Top: E5 | Vocal Range Bottom: G#3

Character Description: Michael's ex-girlfriend, now a friend. She’s neurotic,

pessimistic, self-deprecating, childish, and easily flummoxed. She makes her

anxieties known incredibly loudly and really just wants to be happy.


Max Van Horn (25-35, Male) | Vocal Range Top: G4 | Vocal Range Bottom: Not stated

Character Description: A self-obsessed actor with a limited wit. A firm believer in

his own hype who can’t imagine anyone not being attracted to him.


Jeff Slater (30-45, Male) | Vocal Range Top: D5 | Vocal Range Bottom: B2

Character Description: Michael's roommate. A sardonic realist who lacks the

ambition and drive to live up to his potential. The voice of reason that swirls just

outside the eye of Michael's chaos. Jeff sees the humor of situations and has no

reluctance to point out people’s flaws - even his own.


Rita Marshall (50-65, Female) | Vocal Range Top: B4 | Vocal Range Bottom: F3

Character Description: A levelheaded producer. Experienced and the voice of

sanity and reason in a swirling pool of crazy. She is always a beat ahead of everyone and is very New York.


Stan Fields (No age specified, Male) | Vocal Range: Not Stated

Character Description: Michael’s overworked agent. Always to the point, he plays

the game, but hates it.


Ron Carlisle (40-55, Male) | Vocal Range Top: B4 | Vocal Range Bottom: F#2

Character Description: An incredibly successful director. He demands respect and

is often disrespectful in return.
