Synopsis: A small boy is found dead in a popular children’s play area, and suspicion quickly falls on nine-year-old Lizzie Gael. Written by Australian playwright Hilary Bell, Wolf Lullaby explores parental responsibility, childhood violence, guilt, morality and the unsettling question of whether evil is innate or created.

• Lizzie Gael

  • Female-presenting

  • Character age: 9

  • Performer must be aged 16 or older

  • Bright, imaginative, inquisitive and difficult to categorise. Lizzie becomes the principal suspect after a young boy is found dead.

  • A demanding lead role requiring exceptional naturalism, emotional maturity and restraint. The performer must convincingly portray a nine-year-old without presenting a caricature of childhood.

• Angela Gael

  • Female-presenting

  • Playing age: 25–40

  • Lizzie’s mother. Angela is forced to confront the possibility that her daughter may be responsible for a child’s death and faces an agonising conflict between maternal loyalty and moral responsibility.

  • Requires considerable emotional range and the ability to portray fear, grief, doubt and parental love.

• Warren Gael

  • Male-presenting

  • Playing age: 25–40

  • Lizzie’s father and Angela’s former partner. Warren struggles to understand Lizzie’s behaviour and the implications of the accusations against her.

  • Requires a grounded dramatic performer capable of exploring parental guilt, denial and uncertainty.

  • An experienced police officer accustomed to clear distinctions between right and wrong. The investigation and his interactions with Lizzie challenge his confidence in those categories.
