Title: York Street

Presented By: Mercury Theatre Wynnum Inc.

Genre: Australian Historical Drama

Synopsis: Set in York Street, Coorparoo, between 1939 and 1942, York Street centres on the Murran family as the outbreak of World War II begins to reshape everyday life in suburban Brisbane. Written by local playwright Jim Loftus, the play unfolds through a series of vignettes inspired by real members of his family, particularly his mother, Sonya. As Sonya grows into a young woman, she begins to question the world around her and recognise her own capacity to challenge injustice and create change, foreshadowing her later career as an Australian trade unionist. Against a backdrop of war, family life, humour, hardship, love, and social change, York Street tells a distinctly local story about ordinary people living through an extraordinary period of Australian history. The production will make its world premiere in Manly, Queensland.
