  • THEATRE: Vinegar Tom - 3bCreative | Stage Buzz Brisbane

< Back THEATRE: Vinegar Tom - 3bCreative 23 Aug 2024 Season: August 23rd - 31st, 2024 Title : Vinegar Tom Presented By: 3bCreative Genre : Drama Synopsis: Set in a 17th-century village, Vinegar Tom follows a group of women struggling to survive in a society where a single label can mean poverty, imprisonment, and death. This raw drama, described by Caryl Churchill as "a play on witches with no witches in it," confronts the fight for control over women's inherent power. Despite its historical setting, the play has a contemporary feel, portraying the story of two farm women accused of witchcraft by a man they spurned sexually. Vinegar Tom goes beyond The Crucible by Arthur Miller, illustrating how the persecution of witchcraft suppressed ancient wisdom and traditional medicine. Created with the Monstrous Regiment Theatre Group, it remains a poignant reflection on the marginalisation of women. The performance features original music composed by Cardie Boydell, providing a modern commentary throughout the play. "Boys and Girls at the School Silent Disco" follows a group of Year Six students from Ngaio Primary School as they navigate heartbreak, emotional turmoil, and full-out ideological warfare at their end-of-year silent disco. The play captures the tone in which children of this age tell their own stories, with characters speaking as if they are the hyper-eloquent, tragi-romantic heroes of their own inner monologues. High on the ego that comes from having all of primary school behind them, these kids face a world where adults are almost non-existent, friendships are hard-fought, and minor humiliations can mean the end of the world.
