  • REVIEW: "Monty Python’s Spamalot" at Twelfth Night Theatre

Having had the pleasure of experiencing Monty Python’s Spamalot by Paterson Productions at the Twelfth Night Theatre, I can confidently say that this production stands as a comedic masterpiece that rivals the best of Broadway. Running from November 17th to November 26th, the show not only met but exceeded all expectations, leaving me compelled to attend twice to bask in its brilliance once again. Under the impeccable direction of Shaun McCallum and assistant director Jasmin Flynn, Spamalot promised a tongue-in-cheek, slapstick extravaganza, and it delivered far beyond expectations. The production's distinct and defined happy ending, a delightful twist on the expected, added a unique touch to the familiar Monty Python humour. Julie Whiting, the Musical Director, led a fourteen-piece orchestra with finesse, creating a flawless harmony that perfectly complemented the outstanding vocals onstage. The choreography by Maureen Bowra, assisted by Cerys Downing, was a standout, consistently engaging and flawlessly executed. Now, let's talk about the cast. Patrick Oxley as King Arthur commanded the stage with a perfect balance of regality and comedic ineptitude. His performance was a captivating portrayal that navigated the nuances of the character with precision. Jessica Papst, portraying the Lady of the Lake, emerged as a true standout. Her vocal performances were nothing short of extraordinary, leaving the audience in awe of her range and emotive delivery. Papst's impeccable sense of comedy and brilliant costumes and wigs added another layer of entertainment to her remarkable performance. Jake Lyle, in the role of Sir Galahad, showcased remarkable talent and versatility, delivering excellent vocals and endearing comedic nuances. James Lennox, as Sir Lancelot, demonstrated brilliance with his versatile performances, seamlessly transitioning between characters. Sam Caruana as Sir Robin established himself as a star with delightful comedy and a warm stage presence. Lyle, Lennox, and Caruana, all demonstrated levels of talent and versatility that are characteristic of Broadway-caliber performers. Joan Camuglia-May infused every moment onstage with comedic flair and captivating charm as Sir Bedivere. David McLaughlin, portraying Patsy, was a comedic masterclass, making the character highly relatable and utterly hilarious. Christopher Batkin as the Historian and Prince Herbert demonstrated remarkable comedic flair and versatility, leaving a lasting impact. Backing the main cast, the Laker Girls and the knights ensemble, along with the swings Ruby Thompson and Eleanor Grieve, added vibrancy and depth to the production. Each performer brought their unique personality and boundless energy to create a truly immersive experience. The stellar cast, dedicated creatives, and skilled orchestra have crafted an unforgettable experience filled with laughter and sheer delight. Spamalot™ is not just a triumph; it's a testament to the caliber of talent that resides in the heart of Brisbane's theatre scene, proving that world-class productions can indeed emerge from unexpected places.

  • REVIEW: Footlights Theatrical's "She's All That" - A Resilient Cabaret Affair

Performance Dates: February 3-4, 2024 Location: Nosferatu Distillery, Bowen Hills Director: Rhona Leigh Bechaz Choreography: Samantha Graham Cast: Samantha Hancock Hannah McNamara Hannah Macri Annie James Clare Thomson Marina Pennisi Samantha Sherrin Lisa Alsop Rhea Basha The atmospheric Nosferatu Distillery in Bowen Hills not only provided a captivating backdrop for Footlights Theatrical's "She's All That" but also played a pivotal role in elevating the entire cabaret experience. The intimate setting, coupled with the tantalising aroma of onsite gin production, set the stage for an unforgettable night of entertainment. Two sold-out shows, each housing 70 enthusiastic audience members, turned the venue into a buzzing hive of anticipation, complete with delectable cheese boards and a taco truck. The almost 30-number performance was an unceasing display of energy and talent. Standout group numbers, including the high-energy finale "Born This Way" and the cheeky cabaret rendition of "Lady Marmalade," showcased the cast's versatility. Solo performances were well-rehearsed and executed, creating poignant and empowering moments. The choice of more subdued musical numbers too, such as "Fuckin' Perfect" and "Beautiful," resonated with the audience. The sweet and reflective costuming, coupled with thoughtfully chosen lighting colours, effectively highlighted each girl's personality. Despite the challenging heat affecting hair and makeup, the performers navigated these hurdles with grace, demonstrating their dedication to delivering a visually stunning show. Some volunteer hair stylists might be considered for next time to create a unique stage-ready style for each performer. The first performance faced an hour-long power outage during Hannah Macri's solo, "Both Sides Now." Undeterred, the cast and audience improvised with phone torches, creating an unexpectedly beautiful moment of human connection. Despite technical glitches persisting through the second set, the resilience of the cast, particularly as the power returned during Rhea Basha's powerful rendition of "Girl on Fire," was commendable. The audience played a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere, contributing to a fantastic collective experience. The camaraderie between the performers and the audience turned the unexpected challenges into moments of shared laughter and understanding. "She's All That" emerged as a resilient cabaret affair, overcoming unforeseen technical obstacles with poise and humour. The second performance, marked by improved technical conditions, showcased the true professionalism of the team. Despite the heat, the collective blast of high energy created a memorable experience for all involved. Footlights Theatrical's "She's All That" leaves the audience eagerly anticipating their next cabaret production, hoping for another round of exceptional performances in the future.
